Month 5 of 12

Your baby at 5 months old

Rolling, grabbing, gnawing. Here's a calm snapshot of what may be changing now — and what might help at 3am.

At a glance

The useful numbers, made easier.

Awake between sleeps1.5–2.5 hrs
Naps in a day3
Total sleep in 24 hrs12–16 hrs
Feeding, roughly5–6 feeds · 150–180 ml

Typical ranges, not rules. Cues beat clocks and every baby differs. Steady weight gain and regular wet nappies matter more than one feed; if you're unsure, ask your pediatrician.

Progress, not pressure

Milestones around 5 months old

These come from the CDC's checklists — what most babies (75%+) do by the 4-month check. Missing one or any concern is a reason to talk with your pediatrician, never a score.

  • Smiles on their own to get your attentionSmiling is now a tool for connection, not just a reflex.
  • Chuckles when you make them laughNot quite a full laugh yet — but close.
  • Moves or makes sounds to keep your attentionThey're learning that they can start the interaction.
  • Coos — makes 'oooo' and 'aahh' soundsLong vowel sounds, often back and forth with you.
  • Makes sounds back when you talkYour first real conversations.
  • Turns head toward your voiceKnows where the sound of you comes from.
  • Opens mouth when hungry at the sight of breast or bottleAnticipating what comes next — that's memory at work.
  • Looks at their hands with interestDiscovering that those fascinating things belong to them.

At this age your baby may sit with support, propped on their hands like a little tripod. Sit them between your legs or with cushions around — wobbles and topples are part of learning.

Worth knowing

When to call your doctor

  • Under 3 months with a rectal temperature of 38°C / 100.4°F or higher: call your doctor immediately, even if baby seems fine
  • Fewer than 6 heavy wet nappies a day after the first week
  • Floppy, very hard to wake, or a weak, high-pitched cry
  • Losing skills they already had
  • Your gut says something is wrong — that is a good enough reason
