Baby's First Colds
Colds are frequent and mostly harmless — comfort measures that help, and the warning signs that don't wait.
Babies can catch 8–10 colds in their first year alone — each one builds immunity, but that's small comfort at 3 a.m. with a snuffly, miserable little one. Here's how to help them through, and when a cold needs a doctor.
What to expect
A typical cold brings a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, mild cough, reduced appetite, and sometimes a low fever. It usually peaks around days 2–3 and fades within 7–10 days, though a cough can linger a couple of weeks. Babies struggle mostly because they breathe through their noses and can't blow them.
Comfort measures that actually help
- **Saline drops or spray** into the nostrils, followed by gentle suction with a bulb or nasal aspirator — especially before feeds and sleep.
- **Cool-mist humidifier** in the room, cleaned regularly.
- **Extra fluids:** offer breast milk or formula more often; smaller, more frequent feeds are easier with a stuffy nose.
- **Rest and cuddles** — and holding baby upright can ease congestion.
- For fever discomfort, age-appropriate acetaminophen (3 months+) per your doctor's dosing.
**Never** give over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to babies — they're unsafe under age 2 — and never give honey before 12 months.
When to call the doctor
- Any fever of 100.4°F (38°C)+ in a baby under 3 months — always.
- Trouble breathing: fast or labored breathing, nostrils flaring, ribs pulling in, wheezing or grunting — seek urgent care.
- Refusing feeds or noticeably fewer wet diapers.
- Ear-pulling with crying, symptoms worsening after day 5, or a cold lasting beyond 10–14 days.
- Baby seems unusually drowsy, floppy, or just "not right" — trust that instinct every time.
