Walking: A Wide Road, With Useful Checkpoints

Cruising, first steps and when the CDC says to raise the question.

First steps are not a race

The CDC 15-month checklist includes taking a few independent steps. Some children walk earlier and others are still building balance. Bare feet on a safe surface, stable furniture and floor-level play give useful practice without walkers.

Use the 18-month checkpoint

Walking independently is on the CDC 18-month checklist. If your child is not walking then, is using one side very differently, has lost a movement skill or you are concerned, talk with their doctor and ask about developmental screening.
